As one reads States of Wonder by Nancy Spector, the designer was attracted to the shock value of public art. As mentioned, public art sneaks up on unexpected viewers. It forces pondering and questioning of values within social confines. With this project, it uses exciting images from 90’s magazines to capture the time period that the Speak magazine takes place. Using seductive colors draws in viewers to beg for closer inspection. The type arrangement is based on the important substance relevant to the images chosen for the spread. Highlighting the purposeful emphasis on form and playful structure. Within the eye-catching imagery are elements from Speak such as repeating symbols, shapes, and seemingly mindless doodles. This play with collage is one of the most iconic parts of Speak that was incorporated. The use of advertisements as images pushes the beauty of the unexpected.
